Scope: The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum (CBHFM) is currently recruiting a Collections Translator to work in the CBHFM collection for a 9-week contract from July to August. Reporting to the Care of Collections and Visitor Engagement Supervisor, this position will be primarily responsible for translating artifact records from English to French to support the CBHFM’s long-term digitization goals. The CBHFM commemorates Canadian baseball accomplishments, honouring players, teams, and others. The CBHFM is committed to providing online accessibility in both official languages, as a museum representing baseball in all of Canada. The Collections Translator will build knowledge of working in a small museum, while exercising their French language skills. This position will assist with the enhancement of the CBHFM’s online collections and exhibitions. The Collections Translator assists in making the CBHFM’s physical collections more accessible to the public. the ideal candidate will be bilingual in French and English, have computer proficiency with exceptional organizational and communication skills, and have passion for both baseball and museums.
Reporting to: Care of Collections and Visitor Engagement Supervisor
Location: This position will be located at the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in St. Marys, Ontario, although there is an opportunity for remote work as well.
Responsibilities:
– Primarily work with the PastPerfect database to translate collections records from English to French
– Create a document of frequent baseball-specific terms in French for future and continued translation
– Monitor and maintain environmental conditions in the collections storage room
– When needed, assist with day-to-day museum operations, providing support for tours and visitors, especially those which are French-speaking
– Assist with public events as needed
– Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
– Fluency in English and French is a requirement for this position
– Excellent verbal and written communication skills
– Comfortable interacting with the public and with public speaking
– Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
– Excellent computer proficiency, including with spreadsheets, databases, and word processing systems
– Knowledge of PastPerfect, and Microsoft Office Suite is an asset
– Interest in baseball and knowledge of the current game as well as history of the sport is an asset
– Previous work experience in a museum or library setting is an asset
– Ability to work full-time for eight weeks
Education:
Currently enrolled in post-secondary education in a discipline pertinent to the job function (eg. French teaching, French language, Archival Management, Museum Studies, Canadian History, etc.)
Terms of Employment:
The selected applicant must be able to meet the specific grant requirements:
– Must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible)
– Between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
– Have been a full-time high school, college, CEGEP or university student (as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the work assignment, and intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the work assignment
Rate of Pay: $18.00 per hour
Contract Hours and Duration: 35 hours/week for 9 weeks in July and August
Start Date: July 2, 2024
